The EFA defines developmental editing as dealing with "content, organization, and genre considerations." This is a big-picture edit that focuses on story, character, and structure. After reviewing your manuscript, I compile a "revision letter," which provides an overall critique of the project and offers in-depth revision suggestions. Then, we work together to discuss those revisions and how they may be implemented. As this type of editing requires genre-specific expertise, I offer this service only for Children's manuscripts (including: board book, picture book, early readers, middle grade, and YA projects).

The EFA defines copyediting as "correcting spelling, grammar, usage, and punctuation, checking cross-references, and preparing style sheets that guide consistency and accuracy across the manuscript." In my practice, a standard copy edit focuses on eliminating grammatical errors and ensuring consistency within the manuscript, all while following the Chicago Manual of Style. I'm happy to create a style sheet for the project or follow an existing one. A heavy copyedit (or "line edit") does everything above, while also addressing language, word-choice, and style.

According to the EFA definition, proofreaders check for "typographical errors and formatting mistakes." This is traditionally the final stage of the editing process and is meant to be the last line of defense against errors. Following industry standards, I only proofread manuscripts that have already been professionally edited. I will comb through your document and mark up any formatting or grammatical errors to ensure that it is ready for publication.
